Not long ago, I started buying my first plant, a chilli plant which I named it Lily. Not long after, I got the second - A tomato plant I called Tommy. And 3 days later, I got another chilli plant, Habby the Habenero.

Within a week, Tommy has grown so much! And yesterday, I finally noticed that it is bearing flowers!! And not forgetting Lily has been bearing flowers! SO happy!!!!

Bake Bake Bake

My blog has been on hiatus for quite sometimes eh. Not that I am been lazy (partly though), but I have engaged myself in a new pasttime - Baking.

Never am I a big fan when it comes to baking as I hate the amount of precision and accuracy required in baking. But I just love seeing how these sweet delights put smiles on peoples faces :D

Nice Yiros. One of the better ones I have tasted so far (Only 2 anyway). By the way, in case you dunno what are yiros, they are somewhat "greek versions of kebahs"

The name card is misleading. There's another outlet at Hindley Street, Adelaide. The storeowner was very friendly and we got to taste the meats before deciding which one to get =D

DO try their lamb and chicken if you have a chance. The pork is a bit too saltish for my liking ;)

I made Macadamia and White Chocolates Cookies this time round. And it is was MUCH nicer than the previous one :D Success!

I have never really liked baking as I prefer to use "feelings" rather than measurements when it comes to cooking. But there's always a first time for everything. Hmm.. come to think of that, I did BAKE a cheesecake before......

Cookies with chocolate chips

My first attempt in baking. I made soft cookies, just like the ones from Subway. Few points to take note:

Cookies harden when they are cooled, not when they are heated. I made the mistake and as a result, first batch was slightly overcooked.
Do not start browsing through your friend's photos while baking. I did that and as a result, the second batch was CHARRED.
Do not follow strictly to recipes. Cut down on the SUGAR! My cookies are so damn sweet

Well, at least there's still a batch that can be shared with my friends. And I'm happy that all 4 of them (the fifth may be coming?) said that the cookies are delicious, just a bit too sweet :D. It's my first time afterall. The next will be better :D

MidAutumn Festival ~~

Mid-Autumn Festival is here again. Again, I wasn't able to eat those nice mooncakes back in Singapore. And so this year, I decided to buy from the stores in Chinatown. I spent... erm.. quite a sum on them. But taking into consideration that they have been imported from HK, I guess, they are worth the price bah.


Taipan SnowSkin Mooncake. I heard that they are the first to make snowskin.

The not so ordinary flavours. The blueberry one turned out to be quite nice eh.

And not forgetting the traditional baked ones.

Mei Sum one yolk White lotus paste. Despite my friend's strong recommendation of their double yolk, I got myself a one york instead. 2 yolks a bit jerlut ah

My parents, grandma and aunt were here in July. Beside the frequent visits to the Casino (definitely their favourite in Adelaide!!) and Chinatown, we did squeeze in a few visits to the many many vineyards in Adelaide. Nothing much to boast about in Adelaide, but the cooling weather (if not cold) and the delicious seafood/ food did have some impacts. They actually missed Adelaide - a little.

Barossa Valley. It took us quite sometimes to find our way into the wineries region. Thanks to Google Directions, we took so much 冤枉路, twirling and swirling through the hilly region. So much so that I almost car-sicked. Luckily the view along the way was breathtaking. But nevertheless, we still reached the place safe and sound, although it's already late afternoon when we gotten there. Thanks Masa for his assistance in finding our way. I'm still upset though that I didnt get to taste any wine from Penfolds.

Jacob's Creek, Barossa Valley, SA

Hahndorf. Hahndorf is just a short distance away from the city center (40mins car ride?). It's basically just a German town which is one of the few tourist attraction near Adelaide. Nothing much to do there, beside the German cuisine and maybe their bakery. Everyone of us LOVES their apple pie. Too bad their apricot pie was sold out!

McLaren Vale. Another vineyard in SA, Mclaren Vale is the home to fantastic wine, food and hospitality and the gateway to the stunning Fleurieu Peninsula. McLaren Vale was actually a stop before we head on to Victor Harbour, but as my dear parents woke up late, the plan was scrapped and we end up spending our day in McLaren Vale. I didnt regret going there though as I really love the place. And I will be back!

It was definitely nice to have my parents here. Beside, my dad drives so he can drive us around. Muhaha. And so, this sums up their 7 days trip to Adelaide. :D

Me and Adelaide

If anyone were to ask me whether I am happy, I would definitely say yes in the next few seconds. But am I? Not really. No doubt many people envies me for being able to pursue my PhD on scholarship and some people do envy that freedom from staying alone in a foreign country. But how many people can overlook these and see my loneliness within.

I am seriously happy that I can do my PhD. Afterall, getting a new title has always been my wish. You may be thinking I am so shallow/ himbotic or whatsoever, but really, in the field of research science, you can't really get far without these paper certificates.

I don't mind staying alone, cleaning the house and cooking my own meals. But all these will be more than wonderful if there is someone(s) to share, especially in the context of cooking. Can you understand how much better you will feel if you are cooking for more people than own self? Well, of course you can't cook for lotsa people everyday, but can you imagine cooking for yourself day after day after day... No sense of satisfaction and you get no feedbacks at all. Eventually, you get tired of cooking and stick to cooking the same dishes. No challenges at all to keep you wanting to do better.

I am a competitive person, I agree. And it's this competitive character in me that makes me strive better in studies. This was definitely the case in UQ. But here, all alone, who do I compete with? Myself? Yeah. That's the only person I can think of. But ... but... As a result, I can feel myself losing the motivation. I just need to refuel now and then, I suppose.

Everyone should have noticed that I have been quite involved in facebook, especially commenting on others' profiles and updating my status. Leilei said I am attention seeking which I tend to agree partly. These forms of social networking are my way to tell the world that I am still alive and that I am still "doing well". And to be frank, deep down inside, I wanna know who are still concerned about me. If one day I stop facebooking, will anyone think of me? Will anyone initiate and contact me? Maybe Leilei and Ruru will. But the others? Anyway, I am cutting down on facebook le la. It may not seem to be, but I actually take criticism quite seriously.

It is not easy being alone and Adelaide just makes it harder. Adelaide is indeed BORING. Although I am not an exciting/ interesting/ happening person, walking the same malls now and then is still unbearable. There are many nice restaurants here, but dining alone is just not the way I work. I need accompanies and this is what Adelaide lacks. People whom I can be comfortable with. People whom I can talk much with. Besides, being alone in lab almost everyday, how am I going to know more people? I wonder.. And not forgetting, those depressing moments when your friends graduate and left for home while leaving you behind in Adelaide, lonely once more. I just have to endure, but it gets tougher. Oh talking about this, I know one big one is coming end of the year.

Ok la. Enough complaints. I should be thankful that I am still alive and that I am enjoying more privileges and many others around the way. I'm actually surprised that I was able to write down so much. So many words and I'm kinda tired to proofread, so pardon me if there's mistakes or if you dont understand. Nowadays, I'm just too tired to do most stuffs. Msn, Blog and etc. I even lost the urge to clean the house frequently. I seriously need a break.

Blue and White

If there's something I like about Adelaide, it has to be the sky. The sky is forever changing. But this is exceptionally for Adelaide's. Well, maybe other places too, but growing up in Singapore where the sky is almost always as gloomy as some of my friends, this is something different. Being incredibly blue (Ruru sure loves this!) and wide (maybe from the lack of tall buildings), it just makes me feel happy whenever I look up into the sky. Oh no, not when it is as cloudy as now.

对爸的印象，也莫过于一个烟客。

还记得小时候要他带我到动物园，一次又一次的“下个礼拜”，一直到现在，我们都不曾一起到过动物园。

还记得他拿起了木棍追赶着我打，到最后有没有打下，我也忘了。

还有那么多次的家庭纷争。。。。。。。。

原来对于我的爸，我只记得了他的坏，不曾记住他的好。

想起了那次他喝醉了，整个人垮了下来。我还是第一次看到平时多么坚强的爸爸那么狼狈。直到那时，我才看到了爸内心的挣扎，也看清了他的容貌。原来爸老了。一条一条的岁月，已遍布满脸。他醉了，哭述自己的辛酸。好不容易把爸安置在床，但我和妹早已成了两个泪人。

爸，今年50岁。 29年来，我不曾了解他的辛酸，不曾感受他的辛苦。不是不爱他，不过如果要我说出口，又觉得怪怪的。接下来，我是否会表达对爸的爱，我不知。一切顺其自然吧。

My house was... ALMOST burglared

Most people would have known that my house was almost broken in. Note the 'almost', which means, my house has NOT been broken in. ~~My mum knows it le anyway, so no point not blogging about it le...~~ And I still cannot believe I was at home when this happened. Reminds me of that time in Brissy....

The whole episode is summarized as below:
I heard bangs outside the house and dismissed it as renovation works in the neighbourhood until the bangs got unbearably loud. I walked up from the chair and was walking to the living room when I realised the bangs was outside my house, just behind the blinds in the second bedroom. Went over to the window and drew up the blinds and there, someone was trying to break my glass window. He had succeeded in creating a little hole at the corner which I reckoned he did that so that he could remove the stick that prevented the sliding part from opening. (Whatever la.. I'm bad with description..)

Man saw me, stood up and ran. Me, exclaimed "What the hell" and walked back into the room to grab my phone. I wanted to call the police... But seconds later, I put down my handphone and went online to search for the number to call for non-emergency cases. My house wasnt broken in afterall mah.. Haha.. And then the police came, blah blah blah...

I couldnt believe how amazingly calm I was though. But the hole in the window did traumatise me and making me paranoid, till now. Anyway, the damage's shown in the next pix..

PS: And I did the most stupidest thing after the window was broken.. I went to clean the side of the window that has always been under the mosquito net till it shines. The burglar wore gloves anyway ~ If you can refer back to the pix, realise how dirty is the other side? Anyway, it shines now...

If there's anything I'm like my mum, it must be that we both like to eat bread. Oh well, if you can look beyond that fat thighs and butt, ermm.. and that talkativeness, okok.. and that same voice over the phone. Many people has said that my mum and I sounded alike over the phone. How sad right.... -.- Anyway, back to the topic. I love bread. And I bet Leilei knows it too :) Erm, do you ah?

Ok. Recently, I tried this very expensive loaf of bread which I bought at half price (Almost $5 for one loaf eh if no promotion. Expensive right???).(And suddenly, I blanked out and forgotten what I was going to say next, so I'm just going to publish the pix la...)

It looks delicious right? Haha. With so many different seeds and nuts, it gives you 多重层次的口感. Not the best bread I have tasted so far, but definitely one good recommendation from M&M. Anyway, if you are still wondering what was the best bread I have tasted so far, it's a loaf of Bonjour Apricot eaten on the third day of Outfield. 配合了时间，天时，地利，最乏味的东西，也可以是最美味.

And thanks to YL, I picked up my courage to try a scone again. Ever since I first (and last) tasted a scone made by Xiuxiu (Sorry Xiuxiu) in Brisbane, I never tried another since. But then, Baker's delight scones are indeed nice. Soft in the inside and filled with visible flavours, it 'theoretically' melts in the mouth ~ And according to YL, it is something not to be missed. Haha :P

They came, they went ~

People who followed my blog closely should be able to sense that there was something wrong with me. Although the many posts I made lately might give a wrong impression that I am was very very sad, I was not. I just feel... empty. That feeling of emptiness simply quadrupled after my family went back. Imagine walking into the empty and dark house which was just filled with people, things and noises just the day before. It's simply... depressing. I miss the presence of living beings in the house.

And so, I thought maybe I should do something to keep me busy and hopefully might make me feel better. So I started cleaning the house and do the many many laundry. Kept the mattresses and put everything back to their original location. The house was tidy again and I have successfully cleaned away the last bit of impression that someone was here. That emptiness just doubled....

But oh well. There's an expiry to anything, including emotions. I'm no longer that depressed le and I'm back to the same old cheerful Donald :) Thanks to all those that have given me encouragement during those days. Some names worth a mention: LeiLei, MaMa, MY and Mabel :)

And so now, please be patience. I'm still gathering inspiration, so I will be slow in updating :P And once again, thanks for following my blog ;)

One year ago, I first stepped foot into the School and now, 366 days later, I can finally say that I have quite gotten used to the Adelaide's lifestyle. Despite the occasional down periods when I tend to miss my friends and family a lot, I came to realise that it was more of their company that I am missing. I do of course, miss walking along Orchard with Ruru and Leilei, watching movies with them, eating with them and the little little 'bickers' we had. And who could forget the exchanges of cold jokes between me and Ruru.. hehe.

YL has gone back to Singapore. She does love Adelaide though and said that she would come back if she ever has the chance. Many thanks to her, I got to try out soooo many restaurants in Adelaide. Though this experience was fantastic, the outcome (I AM FAT!!) is kinda undesirable.

I got to agree with YL that food in Adelaide is generally better than Brissy's. Anyway, just a few photos to show what else we have been eating.

My parents will be arriving in less than 10days and I am sure I will be eating a lot again....　Now now, I just got to find ways to shake off the fats before they reach.

Finally got the chance to tour around South Australia. Since Sharon/ YL were driving, we managed to cover quite a distance. First stop was Victor Harbour, then to Hahndorf and finally a city night view from Mt Lofty. It was fun and it was then I realised how much I love travelling... I have been hiding at home!! Bleah. Gotta faster familiarise with Auto transmission and then I can start driving myself around le.

So our first stop was Victor Harbour, where we crossed the bridge to Granite Island and had a long long walk around the island, bearing the wind and biting the cold. Benches can be found around the island and seriously, if it hasnt been that cold, I would have been sitting there looking DEEEEP into the deep deep blue ocean and waiting for whales ~~ It's the whale watching season afterall mah ~

Anyway, pictures speak a thousand words. SO, enjoy...

Yeah.. We went back to Hahndorf. I was back there for the second consecutive weekend. And it's quite funny cos back in Singapore, Ruru was doing her gel xxxicure for the second consecutive weekend too. We had dinner there, this time at a different restaurant. Though the pretzels were better here, I prefer the other. But seriously, beside the food, Hahndorf is a boring small town... and can be a cold one too. We were shivering in the dark cold night, frantically looking for our parked car. This brings me to a question: Why does Australians like having white cars ah? Especially when most dont really like washing it.

The last destination was Mt Lofty. We struggled to get off the car cos it was just tooo cold outside and obviously, we were kinda underdressed. Haha.

Ultimately we got off and took a look at the mesmerizing night lights of Adelaide city. It was nice, but the photos cannot do it justice. Go see for yourself if you have the chance... well, if you believe 30minutes of travelling time is worth the mins of stunning view..

This end up our daytrip out of Adelaide. An unlucky event happened along the way which kinda spoilt our mood. And of course, as usual, I had a bit tooooo much. Seriously a super fat duck now.. and a poor one too.

I'm actually quite amused to taste bits of sea salt within the chocolate. Just a tint of saltiness on top of the bitter sweetness of the dark chocolate. Interesting.

So tired now.. Struggling to keep my eyes opened.... Anyway, I cant help but think I am getting fatter and fatter and will burst soon. YL will be here for 2 weeks while Sharon will join us from tomolo... And then there's the steamboat lunch next saturday and then, my parents will be here in midJuly. OMG.... F.A.T!! How do you think I will lose weight if I have a mother who wont stop eating when she's overseas....

Just a few examples what I have been eating since YL came last Sunday ~

Sigh.. And today's only the third day. With Sharon joining tomolo, I'm expecting we will eat more? Just gotta exercise more I guess ~~

And of course, not forgetting the extra calories intake since Saturday during the trip to Hahndorf (pictures up soon) and the cheesecake. Yes. I think the cheesecake is not nice and I'm finishing every bit of it, well, most. And that's super super fattening... I still appreciate my friends for saying that it is not bad though.

Anyone interested to see a fat duck? Oh oh.. talking about fat duck. I would so love to eat at The Fat Duck Restaurant by Heston Blumenthal at least once. The menu's a freaking GBP150 though. Of course, not forgetting an afternoon tea at The Langham, London, where afternoon tea was first introduced...

And now, back to random net surfing. Gonna wait for YL till her lessons are over. Paiseh to leave her alone for dinner la.. I'm not Giam Beng for free meals k, if that's what you are thinking... Oh ya. All meals are paid by her if I havent clarified myself. Really really appreciate that :D (minus the calories)

Well.. my sis told me that DelMontes in Singpaore are just as long... but but but... i still stand by my view: bananas here are really long and 粗大..

I DO NOT like having a beard

Beard (and sometimes moustache), for me, is seriously a pain the arse. Imagine spending hours plucking them out one by one and yet, still have that faint shadow below your lips. ARGHH.. Irritating k? Especially when there are always few stubborn ones which just refuse to be pulled out (Ask LeiLei too!). And that frequent ingrown hairs and soreness and the occasional bleeding... Sighh

And dont bullshit me by saying one look better with beard/ stubbles ometimes. If you like it, go grow it yourself. At this present stage, I DO NOT like having them...

I am seriously thinking of IPL. Not to that extreme of eradicating them completely (I was told this is kinda impossible), but to such extend that they will grow slower and look lighter (?). I went to do some research and online searches. Came across to this clinic which my friend has been going and checked out what do I need to do before going for the treatment (Shown below)

What do I need to do before my treatment?

Do:

Shave the area to be treated (unless you are having your lip treated)
Leave an area about 4cm x 4 cm unshaved so your therapist can assess your hair thickness and colour

Don’t:

Wax, pluck or bleach your hair for 4 weeks before your first treatment
Tan or be exposed to sun before your treatment – no treatments will be performed on sunburnt skin

That day, I bought something from Woolies. Just when I was exiting the supermarket, I came across this promotion booth just before the exit "If you buy ANY box of Dilmah tea, you can claim a gift".

A Bitter Orange Chocolate Cheesecake with Super Buttery Hard Crust

As promised, the pictures. Notice the bubble holes and fork marks on the cake? Ugly right!

Beside being overly buttery and bittery with a hard crust, the cheesecake tasted fine. Still manageably edible. It was a failure, but just below the passing mark.

I will do better next time. At least, I know now that a slab of butter is 250g! And navel orange juice turns bitter quicker and easier than the other oranges.

I baked a cheesecake tonight. My first attempt and the cake is in the fridge setting at this very moment. Nuff said, it was a failed attempt.. due to my own stupidity....

I thot initially, it was a mistake in the recipe when they asked me to melt 160g of butter into the crushed biskits.... I thot 160g is TOOO much since the slab of butter I have was 'only 50g'...

Being the only '50g' of butter I have, I melted in the whole slab into the biskits, resulting in a super moist and super buttery crust... which failed to set even after baking...($@%#^$ and I even have to clean the oven and sink cos the excess oil that seeps out OILED them...)

But it turned out. I was wrong.. the butter is actually 250g!! I have 'efficiently' melted in 250g of butter... No wonder... sighh.. But but but... sighh.. no more excuses, Donald.. although I know it is hard to believe that the 50g indicated on the wrapping is actually an indicative marker.... (See diagram) whereas the actual weight is at the top right corner... SOOOOO STUPID ME!!!

Sianz.. Now I am left with a super moist crust below a 'not too bad' top trying to set in the fridge... I will do another one soon... AND I WILL GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME ROUND.

Anyway, more updates about myself. I went to Hahndorf today. For the first time!! Finally after almost a year in Adelaide ;) Pics will be uploaded in another entry.

We know that dreams and reality do link. For example, if the radio was on while I'm sleeping, the same songs will be playing in the dreams. This was what happened 2 days ago, at 4pm.

Skipping the unnecessary portions and going into details of the dream, I was listening to my mp3 player. All of a sudden, no songs were playing. We all know that internet radio do get disconnections and needs to buffer occasionally. So, I 'supposed' that's what happened. What's shocking was what I heard after the silence:

Today is the Post-Christmas sales in Adelaide. Advertised as the 'BIGGEST SALE in Australia', I managed to find and bought 4 polos and a towel :D Plus christmas cakes and biskits which are 50% off since Christmas is over :D

Wanna go into LAX (carries brands like G-star, Onitsuka etc) and Swarovski, but the blardy long queue OUTSIDE the store simply deterred me.. I wont wanna queue for at least 30mins just to browse around in the store... But overall, I'm still happy with my purchases :D Now, I'm ready to go back Singapore ^_^

I miss Italy Part 2

Travelling free and easy can be good as well as bad. Good, you get to see things at your pace and walk along streets not commonly walked. Bad, you have to walk most of the time and worry about meals.

Some of the most interesting and exciting moments we had in Italy will not be as enjoyable if we were in a group.

We went into Vatican museum full of expectationAnd came out half dead. It took us more than half day just to catch a GLIMPSE of most things. But everything was so magnificant!

We drank underground mineral water.Only to know DOGS drink from there as well -.-

We went Trevi Fountain in the day.And again in the night

We took pictures of alleys.In fact, a lot of them.

We climbed up 'rocks' in Colosseum and did a '世界那么大' .Only to be chased down the next moment. Damn! She didnt catch the couple before us.

We went into the ruins of Rome.And almost DIED of thirst inside. No vendors selling drinks inside and once you are in, you are IN for HOURS

We had nice pizzas for dinner.At almost 10PM after LONG searches for cheapER food.

We take trains to different cities.And almost ended up in Rome AGAIN despite wanting to go Pisa. We took the wrong train. Wasted few hours! Shit!

We finally reached Pisa.And took pictures there for HOURS with all sorts of FUNNY poses :D

We had gelato.Almost everywhere, every now and then. It wasnt very cheap, but VERY NICE.

We stayed in Hyatt.For TWO days. FOC!!

We get to know new friends:), thanks to NDS.One of the girls (not featured in the pic) is called KAYA. They even lied to my sister saying they will email her. Wahaha.. WHERE WHERE??

I was at my first symposium since arriving in Adelaide. Symposium is just a series of seminars and some posters presentation. Some talks were boring, some were interesting. But nothing beats 'it'. I knew I have fallen in love with it, the first moment I drank it - T2 Peppermint Tea

Refreshing every mouthful. I tried to drink it to keep me awake, but apparently some were just too boring. I really like that tea. I drank 5 cups! And then, during the break, I went to the shopping mall and bought a box of it -.-ll because I failed to 'take' moreeeee from the tea table. It was simply too crowded...

But still I managed to grab 4 :P Hehe.. At least, now with a box of tea, I can enjoy them at my freewill :D Anytime ^^

I was sleeping. Suddenly, I woke up in shock as I felt something flying towards me from outside. That same feeling I had that night in camp. But the room was dark and empty and everything else was calm.

That happened few months back. It was the first and only (hopefully no more in future) time I had such a nightmare (Nightmares involving unexplained objects) in my house. And it was the one and only time my wallet was not by my side....

I am not superstitious or anything, but 宁可信其有 (rather believe). Nowadays, my wallet is always beside me when I sleep.

My first attempt... Not very successful though (But I must emphasize, it's still edible and nice :P) .. Because I got the portions wrong!

I got this recipe online, which suggested me to use 100g of flour. But having no weighing devices, I can only estimate. A search online, gave the following 'Equation'

1 cup = 16 tbsp, 110g of flour = 1 cup
Therefore, 1tbsp ~ 7g

But while, I am measuring, i remembered that a cup = 250g of WATER!.. In the end, I used only 6tbsp..... That explains the mushiness ~

I will do better next time, I believe :)

and Jjajiangmyun (Blackbean noodles) today
